GROUP VERBS (PHRASAL VERBS)
GROUP VERBS( PHRASAL VERBS)
Before learning about group verbs or phrasal verbs, we need to learn PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES.
A preposition is always related to the relation between two things.The noun or noun-type expression follows prepositions. Therefore, the noun or noun-type expression is called a prepositional phrase and that expresses different kinds of meanings, such as direction, location, space , manner, etc. It is to be remembered that some verbs are connected with small words. We call them particles. They are either prepositions, adverbs or both in nature.
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE:
The preposition combines with the Noun Phrase and forms a unit and therefore the entire unit is movable to another position in a sentence.
E.g.
He ran down the street.
The boy climbed up a tree.
In above two sentences the underlined units are movable, as;
Down the street, he ran.
Up a tree, he climbed.
PHRASAL VERB (or, called them Group Verb):
A Phrasal verb is a combination of verb plus adverb particle, having idiomatic in nature, approximated as a unit which is immovable. We should check,
He gave up smoking.
In rains, the river Ajoy eats away its bank.
In above marked unit is immovable, as;
Up smoking, he gave.[!!!]
In rains, away its bank, the river Ajoy eats.[!!!]
FREE COMBINATION :
( Or, may be called Modifying verbs)
In association with an adverb particle this unit is formed, and any idiomatic nature is not shown by them.
eg, He ran out without hearing me.
Here ‘ran out’ leaves idiomatic nature, and has the standard meaning.
PREPOSITIONAL VERB:
Normally choice of preposition depends on noun or noun phrase. In some cases, it is seen that some verb plus preposition phrases are more closely related with the verbs than nouns or noun phrases (= object).
ADVERB PARTICLE AND PREPOSITION:
Such relation words as above, about, across, after, along, around, by, down, in, off, past, through,over,off, round, through, up,and under are both adverbs and prepositions in nature.
Whereas, such relation words as aback, ahead, apart, aside, away, back, forward, forth, and out are used as adverbs and not as prepositions.
And, such relation words as against, among, at, beside, for, from, into, of and with are used as prepositions and not as adverbs. These words sometimes come at the beginning of the phrase as prepositions and not as adverbs.
The above-mentioned related words(i.e. relation words: prepositions, conjunctions and a few adverbs) are called particles because of their special nature.
IDIOMATIC NATURE:
An individual word bears its certain meaning. Individual words are grouped together and form a certain meaning as an expression other than the sum total of the meaning and that meaning of the expression is known as idiomatic nature.
Example
I am done with this new job.
It is raining cats and dogs.
TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS:
Some phrasal verbs are both in nature; transitive and intransitive, a few are only transitive, or only intransitive.
If the phrasal verbs are transitive verbs the passive voice is possible, and if the phrasal verbs are intransitive verbs the passive voice is not possible.
Eg,
Some dishonest men blew up the bridge.[Active]
The bridge was blown up by some dishonest men.[ Passive]
I kicked him out of the door. [Active]
He was kicked out of the door by me.[Passive]
DERIVATION OF NOUNS:
Some phrasal verbs have the derivational feature:
come out ( phrasal verb) and outcome ( noun)
come in ( phrasal verb) income (noun)
OBJECT SEPARATION :
The transitive phrasal verbs have the feature that can separate verb and adverb:
Some interested parties are dragging out some old problems.
Some interested parties are dragging some old problems out.
I had to lay aside my studies.
I had to lay my studies aside.
The adverb particle is placed after the object which is pronoun, as;
Strike out it ungrammatical.[x]
Strike it out ungrammatical.[✓]
If the noun phrase(NP) or clausal object is long, particle separation is not possible,as;
He gave the sweet little children away cakes.[x] [NP]
He gave away the sweet little children cakes.[✓]
He knocked the man that had a gun in his hand down with a single blow. [x] [CL]
He knocked down the man that had a gun in his hand with a single blow.[ ✓]
WHERE TO PHRASAL VERBS
In informal writing and day-to- day speaking.
To make language idiomatic.
Personal letter to friend or close someone.
In stories, to describe events or actions.
N.B. In formal writing when we need distance making, we should avoid the use of phrasal verbs , especially in writing of application, academic writings, commentaries, technical reports, and lectures made by dignified personalities, etc.
PHRASAL VERBS FOR INFORMAL STYLE AND SINGLE VERB FOR FORMAL STYLE.
DISTINCTION BETWEEN PREPOSITIONAL VERB AND PHRASAL VERBS:
PHRASAL VERB:
1.Verb plus adverb
2. Idiomatic
3.Adverb particle may put after the object [pronoun]
E.g.
This winter has eaten them up.
PREPOSITIONAL VERB:
1.Verb plus preposition
2.Non-idiomatic
3. Prepositional particles cannot be moved.
4. Prepositional particles must be put before objects.
E.g.
I called on my sister.
As both phrasal verbs and prepositional verbs have some
dissimilarities, they have some similarities, as;
Both have active and passive forms.
Eg, Ramenbabu is bringing him up.[ Active]
He is being brought up by Ramenbabu. [passive]
Like all phrasal verbs, all prepositional verbs are not used in passive voice.
Although it is true that sometimes a few prepositional verbs are used in a slightly idiomatic way, they are not identified on this basis.
PHRASAL PREPOSITIONAL VERBS
[Verb plus Adverb plus Preposition]
This kind is also a verb combination which consists of both adverb particle and preposition particle and has an idiomatic nature and therefore functions as a unit.
