COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH

COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH

Communicative English is concerned with linguistic communication. Linguistic communication includes body language, oral delivery of words, and written communication. Today it is not just about social affairs nor is the instrument of sophisticated traits. Because of living now in the 'Global Village',it has extended its modes of application. With the changes of time and space, our societies and cultures tend to change.

To acquire attitude, skill and knowledge, as a beginner, we need to do the following. It  may seem boring, monotonous, hard, but our passion will forward us the path of achievement.

  1. We should listen to the radio regularly and follow Englishness

  2. We should watch television programs as well as English movies and learn how they speak and their body language.

  3. The habit of reading newspapers daily is a good habit. Here we learn the use of language, the grammatical usages, vocabularies, etc.

  4. We must not be ashamed of meeting people who know more than we do. Being positive, they are very friendly and helpful if we are able  to create a positive atmosphere with them.

  5. The more we read the more we learn, and grow ourselves by collecting materials for studying such as dictionaries, thesaurus and books of grammatical applications and styles.

  6. We should hear the sports commentaries.

  7. We should compose different compositions such as letters, paragraphs, essays, stories, precis,,summaries, biographies, and the like.

  8. We should check our abilities via internet facilities such as Google, YouTube, etc.

FOCUS ON CONVENTIONAL BARRIER:

We are not speaking one language. Different people have different languages. Whenever we speak English our mother tongues bar us from speaking exactly.

Therefore, we need a neutral accent. To know about a neutral accent we should know about accent, dialect, and style. Dialect stands for the pronunciation which comes from a world of language. Here is a quote from Barnard Shaw: he says that an educated person speaks correctly and with freshness. The style of language depends on how we speak, such as formal, informal,or in a much more formal way.

Some say Indian English is hybrid English. But, say not so. Here is the application of the neutral accent. In knowing a neutral accent we could avoid the regional trend that stands against our exchanges. Thus, a neutral accent is a matter of training or articulating clearly. It improves our ability and enhances our skill.

Though English is English, not an artificial language, we have encountered its varieties. Mainly in;

  1. BRITISH ENGLISH

  2. AMERICAN ENGLISH

  3. INDIAN ENGLISH

  4. SOUTH ASIAN ENGLISH

Broadlessly, British English includes distinguished pronunciations, spellings and phrases. It is called Queen's Language. American English is a kind of network language. South Asian English is very close to Indian English.

INDIAN ENGLISH VOCABULARY CULTURE:

We have learnt English from British people ,for which we owe to them. We have been using English since the 18th century. After self ruled India, English has become our regular usage. For this reason, in Indian Writing in English we have already seen a lot of cases of using words, sentences, phrases and also expressions which have entered into English. The tendency of language  is to use it  in a more flexible way. We have found a lot of Hindi, Urdu, Bengali words in the English Dictionary, such as 'Ferry Ghat', 'Darshan' 'shawal' 'Prannam','Chillum', 'Karma',etc. We have also seen such words that are different in meaning to British English as 'chaste', 'god-man' , 'botheration' 'wrapper'. According to English the word 'chaste' means pure, but in Urdu it means 'the holy moment'. Similarly, the word 'wrapper' means 'the piece of paper that covers something', but in Bengali it means the piece of cloth that is worn especially by women.

Likewise in vocabulary , to the Indian good name means full name, and not pet name , but in English it is not acceptable. The use of 'there' calls for much more attention in the grammatical usage of Indian English and  British English or American English. Same is the case in the use of a lot of adjective meanings. Why is this thing happening? Because language is a mirror of a society in which social system, political speculation, economic sphere, religious organization, and also culture come into existence.

THE GLOBALIZATION AND ITS IMPACT ON LANGUAGES:

We are not in the age of no electricity, no flight,on internet connection, and the like. Man has changed the shapes of the world. So culture and cultivation have changed. Today we can talk to a friend who is from the Atlantic or far away.  Technology has made us meet the gaps. We can see the incidents  in real time. Thus it has become a global village where we find for which we spread our hands. So our culture pattern has changed. The progress of civilization depends on how they use and produce. Civilization has a working brain which tends to adopt perception and value. Our ancestors were illiterate people, but problem gears them up. Once education was related to being physically present. Now the idea has changed due to the abundance of website facilities. It is the era of virtual communication. So language has taken its new shape and literature as well.

Though we have  a world of information and containment today, it is worthwhile that we should learn our language and communicate our emotions. Also, though the global market has created a lot of economy and opportunities, mother's milk is the best feed , and mother tongue, breast milk. Oneness in diversity is always heavenly.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND SOFT SKILLS:

In human life, whether it is communication through the use of language or in any other forms, communication plays a vital role. It is that foundation by which we express our thoughts and emotions. In our everyday life we communicate with thousands and one. In office environments we need it much. A few years ago it was seen that only top offers were to communicate with elit clients. But with the world changing situations, the present scenario has been changed. A junior level official is needed to communicate with high browsers. So communicative skills demand the high application of techniques. An educated man's speech and articulation is correct and refined.  In dealing with clients, a total time is spent on communication. Clients are different, and their activities and regional trends are different. So the role of English in the professional world has deserved its benchmark. Corporate communication or business communication has now drawn a large amount of attention.  An organization is held by a group of people. They have a certain goal. The members remain in constant touch with the others and exchange a heap of information. Thus, comes the discipline of action which includes synthesizing ideas, emotional traits, organizational behaviors, mass media, philosophy, social and cultural studies, interpersonal communication as well as understanding regional tendencies.

Intelligence is intellectuals' properties. Emotions come from the environment and education. Emotion is also a product of sentiment. And sentiments differ from person to person.  So we have to have total  control over our sentiment in our working floors. So emotional intelligence recruits us. Emotional intelligence aims at befitting us in how we handle ourselves at work, how we communicate with juniors and bosses, the extent of how far we are supportive to others, and how we bring our awareness of the peripheral atmosphere. Here comes the appropriate proportionate of applying soft skills.

Soft skills:

A soft skill refers to the cluster of  individual and interpersonal skills , and a makeup of a hard skill. Soft skills are incorporated with personality traits, social graces, application of language, personal habits, friendliness and positivity. The person who has good soft skills is most needed by employers. He is to be ranked higher by them. This is why Brainy young people are  valuable in people management skills, and talents to governments in public administration.

THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF SOFT SKILLS:

Environment is a variable object. It charges its identification at different places. So we must have the ability to recognise them. Each place demands our ability to sense them. So we should know and make responses only when we acquire the total impression of the place. All the power lies within us because of having our brains which helps us to be a man from an animal. We know its aptly application. Whenever we present ourselves to a place, what we should  do first, or how our soft skill is applied. It is our ability to adjust to the new. We must learn by giving ourselves some time to watch who we are and to whom we are with. Also to watch them who are successful people and the toiling ones because their activities and messages are very much important for us. Effective listening is a powerful ingredient of soft skills.

The English are the most civilized people. They are so civilized that when we get an opportunity to come in close contact with them, we understand our shortcomings. A citizen is a symbol of a country. A successful man is a symbol of a country. A good man is a symbol of a country he represents.

Today's world demands English language application. From a cobbler house to the Parliament House the power of authority is best recognised by the ability of speaking, reading and writing standard English. In a business environment it is mostly needed.

Soft skill includes the behavioural setup among many. Attitude is  best known by bests. It is related to time management as well as motivation. Behavioural setup means ordered arranging own tasks for the best progress. It is understood by experience. Experience comes closer to the open minded. So if mistakes happen, ask questions to those who are successful people and achievers. In many cases we are defeated by their logic, reasoning and much more is criticized by them, we become insulted and resentful. But soft skill is more than this. It shows us directions to the proper path of achievement. So without feeling insulting , rather being inspired and the control of emotion is the matter of behavioural setup.

Curtsey is another important requirement of soft skill. It consists of personal appearance and social graces. It includes dress, grooming, body language, controlling of voice, and vocabulary to particular culture. So curtsey is the sign of social graces. Dressing setup is a reference to respect to others. It gives us respect and self-esteem and also describes our contribution to dignity to others. Besides these, soft skills also have many other requirements. The above mentioned are the basics.

         BODY LANGUAGE

When we communicate, our body language plays a severe role. It is non- verbal communication, other than written or oral communication. It includes the followings:

  1. Appearance

  2. Posture

  3. Gestures

  4. Facial expression

  5. Eye contact

  6. Space distancing

Appearance:

Appearance is one of our behavioural traits that builds impressions with listeners. It is said that the first impression is the last impression. Within 30 seconds, when , in going to communicate, he or she utters his first word, the listener (s) begins to visualise about him, his style of approaching. Our appearance , like hostility, aggressiveness, gentleness, modesty, etc creates the first effect on the listener(s). For this reason, a good many organisations emphasize on the uniform which indicates the kind of work one is interested in.

Uniforms or clothes are our status. It is well said that occasions specify dress or uniform. Our appearance is the mirror of our mentality . It is our personality as well. We are fully programmed with uniform, makeup and in hair style, and also wearing a smile.

Posture:

Posture shows how our habits are our genuineness. It is the most important part of our body language. It refers to how we stand, walk and sit. All these reveal our personality. When we stand , it expresses our ability and nervousness ,whether we are dynamic, confident, self-help and optimistic or dull, despondent, motivated, and pessimistic. A good personality stands tall because his feet are able to balance his body weight and he speaks with confidence because his utterance speaks for him. A dropping figure as well as pushing stomach is the expression of a discouraged and tired speaker. Similarly, if we sit in a chair and explain something, we should avoid reclining in the chair and not dragging our legs. When we walk, we walk straight and do not stride or walk with baby steps. When we speak, speak with an iron determination, and be energetic , and also leave our nervousness and discouragement in the prayer hall.

GESTURES:

The cluster of gestures has a very vital role in making communication. Gestures include both bad and good traits. The bad gestures are like biting  lips, playing  rings and cutting nails with teeth etc.  The good gestures are like nodding head for yes and no, shrugging of shoulders and flourishing hands. A large sum of oral communications are made with gestures. Unknowingly we have become habituated with these. Sometimes we fail to communicate without the accompanying gestures. Good gestures are the good quality of a communicator. All of us may not have  such qualities. Good gestures need constant practice. We are able to form this quality by practicing before a mirror. It has a powerful impact upon the listener(s) and therefore a good communicator must possess this quality. To learn good gestures, we may take help from our friends, colleagues and from them who are good communicators. English people know good gestures. There are many mediums which may help us much.

FACIAL EXPRESSION :

Face is called the mirror of mind. It is the most expressive part of the body. Facial expressions include a friendly smile, a discontent frown, an antagonistic tightening jaw and  the disbelieving raising eyebrows.  Bright and cheerful eyes always bring and sustain interest in listeners. It may bring an eager and enthusiastic response. But a wooden  expressive face may lose its listener(s). A complex matter may easily be discussed with a smiling face. Effective communication always demands friendly facial expressions. In absence of this element or proper facial expression, a good effective communication may become ineffective. It is noteworthy that biting of lips, raising eyebrows at regular intervals or twinkling of eyes too often mars the smooth flow of communication.

EYE CONTACT:

Eye contact is one of the most important aspects of  body language. That eye is the window of the soul is true. Eyes speak for the speaker's brain. When we communicate or transmit a message to a listener, we keep our eyes on his face, and perceive his eagerness. In the interaction, a good speaker always keeps his eyes on all sections of the audience. He keeps his eyes neither on the floor, the ceiling or doors. He never ignores this process because he knows well that if he does this he must lose the interest of his audience and fail to deliver his message. Eye contact is a means of feedback of both speaking and listening.

SPACE DISTANCING:

Among a number of aspects of body language, the space distancing  at the time of communication calls a commanding position. It is popularly known as social distance. In social interaction, especially in public gatherings, a zone of specific ranging is maintained. When a dignified figure while providing lectures or commanding, he stands at a distance. If the listener is very friendly or close, the question goes to the communicator or the speaker how they communicate, whether space distancing or not. Of course, space distancing calls attention to the culture and different countries have different cultures, but it should not be ignored.
